What we do in the dark: Prevalence of omnivorous feeding activity in Arctic zooplankton during polar night

چکیده

During the productive polar day, zooplankton and sea-ice amphipods fulfill a critical role in energy transfer from primary producers to higher trophic-level species Arctic marine ecosystems. Recent night studies on suggest levels of biological activity than previously assumed. However, it is unknown if these invertebrates maintain stored lipids, opportunistic feeding, or combination both. To assess how (copepods, amphipods, krill) support themselves seasonally varying resources, we studied their lipid classes, fatty acid compositions, compound-specific stable isotopes trophic biomarker acids during day (June/July) (January). Lipid storage results confirm described dietary sources all day. We found evidence feeding species, including shifts herbivory omnivory. Sympagic-, pelagic-, Calanus spp.-derived carbon supported both seasons. provide first indication pelagic realm.

Diel vertical migration of Arctic zooplankton during the polar night

High-latitude environments show extreme seasonal variation in physical and biological variables. The classic paradigm of Arctic marine ecosystems holds that most biological processes slow down or cease during the polar night. One key process that is generally assumed to cease during winter is diel vertical migration (DVM) of zooplankton. DVM constitutes the largest synchronized movement of biom...

Bioluminescence in the high Arctic during the polar night

This study examines the composition and activity of the planktonic community during the polar night in the high Arctic Kongsfjord, Svalbard. Our results are the first published evidence of bioluminescence among zooplankton during the Arctic polar night. The observations were collected by a bathyphotometer detecting bioluminescence, integrated into an autonomous underwater vehicle, to determine ...

comparison of catalytic activity of heteropoly compounds in the synthesis of bis(indolyl)alkanes.

heteropoly acids (hpa) and their salts have advantages as catalysts which make them both economically and environmentally attractive, strong br?nsted acidity, exhibiting fast reversible multi-electron redox transformations under rather mild conditions, very high solubility in polar solvents, fairly high thermal stability in the solid states, and efficient oxidizing ability, so that they are imp...
